Be careful what you wish for

A few months ago, I posted that I was wondering what to do with my blog. I had crossed the 3 year anniversary, but I was starting to lose interest in it, or rather I was starting to grudge the amount of time I spent on it. I was getting steady traffic, but I hadn’t managed to make the leap into the big time. However, I also hadn’t expended the effort 24 x 7 to make it so. Blogging is something I do for enjoyment, it was never intended to be an income stream.

So as 2020 arrived, I was still in that decision phase. Will I keep it going? Then I had a discussion one night with my son along the lines of – Mum it is 1 month since you posted – are you going to keep going?, prompted me to get up bright and early and try to start a blog post again.

What happened? Well nothing, or rather I couldnt do anything! I got ‘the screen of death’ as soon as I logged into WordPress!

Cracking Retirement - error screen

What to do now? I did the usual things
– try again in a while,
– wait till tomorrow,
– switch everything off and on, just in case…

Fortunately my son is a software wizard, so I set him on the problem. He moved it forward a bit, but it soon became evident it was part a hosting problem, part a WordPress problem. As I am in NZ at the minute, I decided to leave it until the morning… (U.S evening). Bluehost responded quickly, and my problem was resolved in just a few minutes. I shut everything up, and headed out for the day.

I got back from my day out, and full of keenness, I decided to write a new blog post… My website wouldn’t even connect to wordpress. Back to Bluehost, except, this time the response was ‘NIL’, I couldn’t even get an initial answer on Chat, and I am certainly not going to call US from NZ.

The saga continued, another resolution chat, success. Another day out, another fail. Yet another screen chat, success, and then I decided to ‘grab the opportunity’ and publish a very brief post. Just to prove I could. This is it! Far shorter than usual….

So back to the purpose of the story – When I discovered I might lose the Cracking Retirement website, I realised it was important to me! I really was having a break, and it was something I would go back to…

So Dear Readers, you haven’t got rid of me yet!

Update – As of 20th February 2020, my site has been rebuilt, tested, etc, with help from Kat at LuckyAceCo. Thank you so much!

  1. “Be careful what you wish for” is so true and inspirational. Life throws us curve balls and sometimes we need to forge ahead. I really enjoy your writing, especially your Athens article. I hope you share your NZ experiences!
